The cut refers to those parts of the diamond which determine its reflective properties.

Diamonds that are poorly cut do not return the light that enters, leaving both their beauty and their value diminished. If the cut is poor, the quality of the other three Cs cannot save a diamond's value.

Clarity of a diamond is a quality that can produce a marvelous stone. Poor clarity may produce a dull, dead, or even a lifeless stone. Clarity can be referred to by other terms, such as purity or quality. The term clarity means clearness.

The clearness of a diamond allows the passage of light without obstruction. Stones with exceptinal clarity exhibit no inclusions and/or carbon spots that interfere with the passage of light.

When grading the whiteness or lack of color in a diamond, stones are compared to a standardized scale under very strict lighting conditions. Without controlling the value, hue and intensity of the lighting conditions under which stones are viewed, locating a diamond on the color scale would be pointless.

The Crown of the diamond includes the Table and the facets above the Girdle of the stone.

When diamonds recieve light through their Crowns, the light is reflected from side to side within the stone by the Pavilion.

After crossing the interior of the diamond, the light should be reflected back out again through the crown.

Round is the most popular of all the diamond shapes, perhaps because it is the most brilliant.

The Heart shape is basically a clefted Pear. With heart shape diamonds, personal appeal is important. Not every heart will have pleasing proportions for all people. Some prefer broad hearts. Some prefer narrow.

The Oval shape is much like round. Although it is elliptical, oval stones get many of the same angles of cut as round diamonds. Oval diamonds are sometimes set in rings with their length running with the length of the finger when worn.

The Pear shape is a combination of a round brilliant and a marquis cut. Pear shaped diamonds often look stunning when set point up in pendants and earrings, due to the "Teardrop" shape.

Contrary to the widely held belief that diamonds form from coal under pressure, coal seams (deposits) never reach the depth inside the Earth's mantle to be subjected to pressures great enough to do the job. Instead, diamonds are formed from carbon in an igneous rock called kimberlite - which may be composed of carbon-12, the isoptope of carbon that is characteristic of living things.

The natural processes that create large diamonds do not often occur, therefore larger diamonds are of greater value than smaller ones. Size, however, is only one of many factors that determine the value of a stone.

Each of the Four C's is an aspect of an individual stone that can have an effect on that stone's value. Balancing the various qualities of diamonds, and selecting diamonds to serve certain requirements, can be a challenge for anyone not well versed in these characteristics of individual stones.

The clarity of a diamond is a reference to the existence of any flaws in the diamond. Diamonds may have flaws either in their interior (inlcusions) or on their surface (blemishes).

When diamonds are graded for clarity, the term "blemish" isn't used. All flaws, inclusions and blemishes alike, are referred to as inclusions for simplicity sake.
